Ray Brooks keeps alive, scores late to beat Puckett 34-21

In a classic game of two running titans, Ray Brooks were able to score very late on a lightning 88 yard run by Devarcus Ireland, then intercepted Puckett and carried the interception to the endzone to put the cap on a hard fought game, 34-21 over the Puckett Wolves.

Both teams scored in their initial possessions, with Ray Brooks trying to for two and unable to convert.  Both defenses stiffen up and the quarter ends with Puckett ahead 7-6.  Both teams score in the second quarter and once again both defenses stiffen.  Puckett starts a late drive in the first half that culminated with a 4th down on the Ray Brooks 2 yard line with seconds remaining in the first half.  Puckett tried a run up the middle and were stopped, ending the first half.

The second half showed more of the same, with Ray Brooks stuffing a fourth down try by Puckett with 4:49 in the 3rd quarter.  Ray Brooks moved to a no-huddle offense and had Puckett on their heels, driving to the Puckett 10 yard line.  On a fourth down Devarcus Ireland caught a 10 yard pass for a touchdown, giving the Tigers a 18-14 lead.  The two pointer was no good.

With 8:14 to go in the game and facing a third and long, Bobby Williams of the Wolves threw a long one to the endzone where it was first tipped by John Cameron of Puckett and caught by Quincy Champion, who took it in for a 32 yard touchdown.  The extra point was good, putting Puckett ahead 21-16.

Late in the game Ray Brooks fumbled the ball and Willis of Puckett took it back to the 3 yard line of Ray Brooks, but on a 4th and 1 was unable to score, stopping Puckett on the one foot line.  On the first play Ray Brooks gets some breathing room with an 18 yard run, then catch a procedure call.  On first and 15 on their own 12 yard line, Ireland broke through a hole between the tackle and tight-end, avoid a brush by the linebacker and took off to the endzone.  Champion tried to stop Ireland on the 15 but he broke free, ending with an electric 88 yard run that put Ray Brooks in the lead for good.  The two pointer was good, putt Ray Brooks ahead 26-21.

A short kickoff and a sack by Ray Brooks left Puckett a third and 16, and Williams was picked off by Ray Brooks, who took the interception into the endzone for a 47 yard return.  The two point conversion was good, padding the scoring to 34-21 with 40 seconds to play.  Puckett only had two more plays left, and Ray Brooks ended the game as the 1A State Champion.

Puckett ended their season as the South State Champion and a 13-1 record.  Ray Brooks also ended with a 13-1 and the State 1A championship.
